The Candy Challenge!

 Back in July 2011, we gave the kids a candy challenge that if they went an entire year without candy or soda that they could 'earn' $100.  Jessica made it three weeks, Tanner, four. But, sweet Taylor made it the entire year and bought himself a new bike.  We made a big to do about it. 1. because we were proud of Taylor for setting and accomplishing such a big goal, and 2. we wanted the others to see there are rewards to setting and accomplishing goals...Well, it worked.  July 2012, the kids again started on the candy challenge, including mom (if Taylor could do it, I could!?), and this time we all accomplished the goal!  It definitely wasn't easy. The hardest part for me...giving up Diet Coke.  I'm a social drinker, and dinner out with friends was especially hard. The kids decided they wanted to use their hard earned money to purchase kayaks, so we named them to help them always remember what a big goal they have accomplished.
Lime Rickey, Blue Skittle, and Orange Soda
 So proud of these little cuties!
{Tyson was just a little too young to participate this year...he wouldn't have made it a day ;)}
 Of course new kayaks need a new spot created just for them in the garage. Good thing Phil is such a handy man...and a little OCD about his garage ;)  He built this shelf for them in a no time and they just seem so happy up there!
After seeing how much the kids enjoy their kayaks, I decided I needed one as well and used my candy challenge money towards one for me, and Phil decided we could finally sell our canoe {which we had used twice} and he used that money to get him one as well.  Now we're a little family of kayakers.  Don't worry, Phil and I named our kayaks as well...
Mine is Mellow Yellow (again for the challenge)
and Phil's is Blue Bayou.

love it!!! Kayaking is so much fun, and doing it as a family is a wonderful activity!!! My kids would be so jealous their cousins all have their own. And what a wonderful lesson to teach them, too.
